Laws broadly legalizing marijuana in a certain form have passed in 33 states and the District of Columbia, while a number of other states also decriminalized the possession of marijuana in small amounts.

Marijuana is now legal for adults aged over 21 and for recreational use in 11 states: California, Alaska, Maine, Washington, Vermont, Illinois, Michigan, Colorado, Massachusetts, Oregon and Nevada. Medical marijuana is legal in 33 states, including those mentioned above.

Earlier this year, Illinois became the second state to legalize marijuana through the legislature instead of a ballot initiative, which is a significant step, considering that 2018 has been a banner year for cannabis legalization. Recreational marijuana sales in Illinois will become possible in the 55 medical dispensaries, starting from January 1st, 2020.

The first state to decriminalize cannabis for recreational use through the state legislative process was Vermont, but it did not legalize retail sales yet.
