The Legend Behind 420
Some people have at least heard that the number 420 is related to cannabis culture. However, not many know the true story behind it.
What does 4/20 mean?
As a term, 420 refers to the tradition of using cannabis on April 20 (4/20), each year (it is like the unofficial weed`s day).
Where does 420 come from?
420 was first used by a group of teenagers in San Rafael, California, in 1971. The group was called Waldos and used the term for the first time when they made a plan to look for an abandoned cannabis crop.
Waldos designated the statue of Louis Pasteur from San Rafael High School as their meeting place, and 4:20 p.m as their meeting time. They coded this information in the phrase "4:20 Louis". Several unsuccessful attempts by Waldos to find the cannabis crop shortened the term to "4:20".
Today, the events of April 20 are international, and 4:20 has become the international time for having a joint. There are even festivals organized in many countries, of which we mention Hippie Hill (San Francisco, California), London 420 Rally (Hyde Park, London, United Kingdom), Vancouver Smokeout (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) and last but not least The Amsterdam 420 Festival (Amsterdam, The Netherlands)
