What is THC?

Marijuana has two main ingredients: CBD and THC. While CBD is the ingredient responsible for the medicinal and therapeutic effects of weed, THC or tetrahydrocannabinol is the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana responsible for the state of relaxation and euphoria experienced while consuming cannabis, the compound that induces the positive psychological effects.

THC is very similar to the cannabinoid produced naturally by the human body. The human brain has cannabinoid receptors that are associated to numerous cognitive and emotional functions, such as memory, coordination, pleasure and the perception of time. When THC is introduced into the body from an external source, the substance activates these receptors and induces the positive mental and psychological effects.
Besides the psychological and cognitive effects, THC has also been successfully used to reduce the vomiting and nausea associated with cancer or HIV/AIDS medication and many depression sufferers prefer marijuana to prescription anti-depressants because weed poses a very low risk of causing addiction and it has very mild side effects, if any at all.
THC is found in the resin secreted by the marijuana buds as well as in the leaves and in the flowers. The hybrids currently cultivated can be very different in terms of THC content – the varieties grown for recreational purposes contain higher concentrations of THC than the plants grown for medicinal purposes that are dominated by marijuana’s other ingredient, CBD.
